1. Misaligned Teeth Isn\u2019t a New Concern<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, misaligned teeth aren\u2019t a modern problem. On the contrary, teeth irregularities were found in the skull of a Neanderthal man in 50,000 BC.! Despite this, the first record of orthodontic treatment wasn\u2019t until about 3000 years ago. Unfortunately, archaic metal bands were used at the time \u2013 thank goodness for modern braces!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Pierre Fauchard Is Credited with Creating the First Braces<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pierre Fauchard, a physician, is credited with creating the first braces because he used a flat piece of metal and a piece of thread to straighten teeth. This was back in 1728, so the field of orthodontics still had a long way to go. In fact, it wasn\u2019t until 1915 that the first orthodontic brackets were invented!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Braces Are Not Magnetic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many patients have heard the rumor that braces are magnetic. Don\u2019t worry \u2013 that\u2019s not true. They won\u2019t set off metal detectors, they won\u2019t pick up radio transmissions, and they won\u2019t put you at risk of being struck by lightning either!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. NASA Helped Make Modern Braces Possible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In short, NASA created an innovative nickel titanium that has shape memory properties. Although it was originally intended for space shuttles, it actually ended up being the perfect material for braces. This wouldn\u2019t be the last time this space program made a significant contribution to orthodontics either. They made the translucent material used for clear aligners as well!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Braces Aren\u2019t Just for Kids and Teens<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s common for adult patients to assume that braces are only suitable for kids and teens. That\u2019s not the case!
